The Indian Community Centre has received the Our Heritage grant for their project “Indian Heritage in Northern Ireland” from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The two year long project will record and showcase the stories of Indians living in Northern Ireland. The first generation Indians arrived in Northern Ireland back in 1930s. Many of them have already passed away. While some of them are still alive this is the best time to listen to their untold stories. “Indian Heritage in Northern Ireland” is going to extract their stories, experiences and perceptions to provide precious physical and intangible heritage. The project intends to look at how Indians and local communities have interacted and benefited from each other and the impact and contribution that the Indian population have made in Northern Ireland. This huge project is set to start from November 2008. On the eve of the Diwali celebration on 2nd of November 2008, the Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Tom Hartley spoke highly about the project. Mr. Paul Mulan, the Regional Manager of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Mr. Billy Armstrong MLA, Mr. Patrick Yu OBE, Executive Director of Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities and Dr. Duncan Murrow, the CEO of Community Relations Council were present at the event along with the Members of the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees of the Indian Community Centre. The event took place at the Indian Community Centre’s own premise located at 86 Clifton Street. |
